Cranberry is an evergreen plant, shrub with thin and short sprouts. The average length of shoots is about 30 cm; wild cranberries are red, spherical, 8-12 mm in diameter. Some specially bred varieties have berries up to 2 cm in diameter. The cranberries blossom in June, the harvesting of berries begins in September and lasts throughout the autumn. Cultivated cranberries ripen 1-2 weeks earlier than the wild varieties. Cranberries can be easily stored until spring. Cranberry is consumed in food fresh and frozen, pickled or dried; it is used for production of juices, marss, jellies, jams, cocktails and cranberry kvass; or it can be added to salads, pies and other dishes. Cranberry grows in many countries, if conditions permit; it prefers swampy forest soils, sedge-sphagnum swamps, tundra and moss swamps.
